Information on Commissioning New Works
Dr. Cheetham is actively composing music on a commission basis for all types of instrumental
and choral ensembles as well as for solo instruments. Each work is personalized, when
appropriate, based on such factors as characteristics of the ensemble, historic or geographic
considerations, memorial pieces, celebratory or festival occasions, etc. All works are written in
accordance with the commissioner's needs.
Full bound scores are provided along with master copies for instrumental parts. Piano
reductions are included when needed. Credit is given to the commissioning individual,
organization and/or performers on each copy (including subsequent copies offered by the
publisher). The commissioning organization has the right of premier performance. The work will
only be available for widespread use and sale after the premiere performance (or performance
for which the piece was intended).
If you are interested in commissioning a work, the composer will be glad to discuss your ideas
with you. The fee will depend on the length of the piece and the ensemble for which it is
composed. In discussing your plans, it is helpful if you have specific information concerning the
purpose of the commission, ensemble size, length of work, instrumentation, any text that might
be involved, when the work is needed, etc., so that he may quote you a firm price.
Examples of recent commissions include works for chorus and orchestra, sonatas for tuba and
saxophone, a concerto for saxophone and band, several pieces for symphonic band, a work for
string orchestra, and fresh new arrangements of Christmas music for concert band.
