SATB (A cappella)
“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” is the popular second of two versions of this carol which dates back to London of the 17th century. The identity of its originators is not known. This version of the tune is attributed to John Stainer, one-time organist of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London and whose carol-settings have been influential to modern writers and arrangers. Charles Dickens must have known this carol as he makes reference to it in his 1843 work, A Christmas Carol.
