“The Holly and the Ivy” is an early English carol with intermingled Christian and pagan imagery, according to John Rutter.  The holly symbolizes the masculine element while ivy represents the feminine.  And in Christian tradition, holly and ivy were used for Christmas decoration since around the fifteenth century.  This carol was first published by Cecil Sharp in his collection of English Folk-Carols.
