SATB (A cappella)
“What Is This Fragrance?” is a traditional French carol (“Quelle est cette odeur agreable?”). The translation for this setting was done by K.W. Simpson. The tune is so old that it appeared in Gay’s “Beggars Opera” in 1728. The tripartite structural design (ABA), graceful melodic line and almost mystical quality of the text all contribute to the gem-like charm of this carol.
